Meta Description

SEO

Quick Definition

An HTML meta tag providing a brief summary of a webpage's content, displayed in search engine results below the page title, influencing click-through rates though not directly affecting rankings.

Meta descriptions serve as advertising copy for your content in search results, directly impacting whether searchers click your result versus competitors. While not a ranking factor, optimized descriptions improve click-through rates, indirectly supporting SEO performance through engagement signals.

Effective meta descriptions concisely summarize page content in 150-160 characters (the display limit in most search results), include target keywords naturally (bolded in results when matching searches), communicate clear value propositions, and include calls-to-action when appropriate. Descriptions should be unique for each page rather than duplicated across the site.

For example, a retirement planning service page might use: "Comprehensive retirement planning for professionals approaching retirement. Our certified financial planners help maximize income and minimize taxes. Schedule your consultation today." This describes the service, mentions the target audience, highlights a benefit, and includes a CTA—all within character limits.

When meta descriptions aren't provided or seem irrelevant to queries, search engines generate their own snippets from page content. However, this automated approach often produces less compelling copy than purposefully written descriptions. Regular review of search console data identifies pages with low click-through rates that may benefit from optimized descriptions.
