Search Intent

SEO

Quick Definition

The underlying goal or purpose behind a user's search query, critical for creating content that satisfies their needs.

Search intent (also called user intent or query intent) is the reason why someone performs a specific search. Understanding and matching search intent is one of the most important factors in SEO success because Google prioritizes content that best satisfies the searcher's goal.

Four Types of Search Intent

  • Informational intent - seeking knowledge or answers ('what is a Roth IRA')
  • Navigational intent - looking for a specific website ('vanguard login')
  • Commercial intent - researching before purchase ('best financial advisors in Boston')
  • Transactional intent - ready to take action ('schedule financial planning consultation')

Why Intent Matters

If your content doesn't match search intent, you won't rank well even with perfect keyword optimization. Someone searching 'Roth IRA conversion' with informational intent wants an educational article explaining the process—not a sales page pushing your services. Creating transactional content for informational keywords (or vice versa) results in poor rankings and high bounce rates.

Matching Content to Intent

Analyze the current top-ranking pages for your target keyword. If they're all comprehensive guides, create a guide. If they're all comparison pages, create a comparison. If they're all local business listings, optimize for local SEO.

For financial advisors, most valuable content targets informational intent (building trust and authority) while strategically targeting some commercial intent keywords (capturing people actively seeking an advisor).

Examples

  • Creating an educational guide for 'how to rollover 401k to IRA' (informational intent) versus an appointment scheduling page for 'financial advisor for 401k rollover help' (transactional intent)
  • Developing a comparison article for 'fiduciary vs fee-only financial advisor' (commercial research intent) with clear explanations and a soft CTA
  • Writing a detailed answer to 'what is sequence of returns risk' (informational) that builds authority without pushing services
